The LEEP Journey: Freshman Year

"I joined NJ LEEP because I saw the effect it had on my sister. She was hardworking, but NJ LEEP pushed her further to achieve her goals. That’s what I want for myself.

—Ramon Jack, NJ LEEP Class of 2021

This year, Ramon will learn critical thinking skills, develop effective study habits, and gain exposure to the professional world. Just as important, he will become part of the NJ LEEP family.

Ramon and our students share a common goal: college graduation. To succeed, Ramon will begin to build a community where students, staff, and families support one another through challenges, setbacks, and triumphs.

"At SLI, reality set in. I met so many successful people and I realized that what I did in middle school wasn't going to make me successful in life."

After an intensive five weeks in the Summer Law Institute (SLI) where he learned about criminal law and competed in a mock trial, Ramon was welcomed into the four-year College Bound Program at our annual overnight retreat. He played games and engaged in team-building activities with his new classmates to better understand the value of teamwork and community.

Throughout the year, Ramon will continue to build his community while also learning both the hard academic skills and the soft social-emotional skills needed for educational success.

Ramon will take a Life Skills class where he will learn study skills, time management, sex and sexuality awareness, and conflict resolution. He will also begin our four-year Saturday Writing Program, where as a freshman he will commit to three Saturdays a month to help him master grammar and become a better writer and reader.

Thank you for your partnership in helping our students realize their dreams! Because of you, 100% of NJ LEEP program graduates have gone on to college.
