The LEEP Journey: Alumni
"It is an amazing feeling to work with
like-minded peers and staff towards success on an individual level and as a community. All of my successes I can attribute to certain things that have happened in my life, certain moments, and they all lead back to LEEP."

I have had the good fortune of knowing Abdurrahman since his very first day of high school. He has grown into an amazing young man and I am so proud of him. He shares his LEEP journey below.
– Matthew Feinstein, Executive Director
Eight years ago, I had little interest in attending NJ LEEP’s Saturday morning group interview, but my mother encouraged me to go. Having emigrated from Nigeria, my parents knew that education was the pathway to a good life. Four years ago, I was reluctant to even consider applying to Georgetown. I was a strong student, but there was a nagging voice inside my head that said I wasn’t smart enough. Ms. G at NJ LEEP convinced me to apply. A few months ago, I visited LEEP to ask for help with my job search and Ms. A introduced me to one of her contacts. I am now a Georgetown graduate and employed full-time at a local nonprofit because of NJ LEEP's belief in me.
When I reflect on these moments in my life, I’m reminded of how fortunate I was to be a part of NJ LEEP. There are thousands of high school students in Newark but only a fraction of them get the opportunity to be part of this unique community where everyone knows and cares for each other. It is an amazing feeling to work with like-minded peers and staff towards success on an individual level and as a community.
It is impossible for me to look back at the past eight years without acknowledging how integral NJ LEEP was, and is, to my growth as a student and person. NJ LEEP helped me develop the hard skills that made me a good student and equipped me to think critically, study effectively, and strive for academic success. I also became more social which did a lot for my self-confidence. I don’t think I could have navigated so effectively through college if not for this program.
Because of your support, I graduated from Georgetown University in May!
To repay LEEP’s investment in me, I am investing in the success of other students by working as a Saturday Writing Instructor and showing students first-hand what dedication to the program can lead to.
While many students will face struggles and have moments of self-doubt like I did, they will also learn to face challenges and celebrate their successes. And like me and 143 of my NJ LEEP peers, they will go off to college with the confidence that they can and will succeed.
Thank you for helping me and my fellow NJ LEEP students succeed. I’m asking you today to make a donation to NJ LEEP to support students like me. Together, we can help more students succeed. Whatever you can contribute to help sustain and enrich the experiences of NJ LEEP students would be greatly appreciated.
